San Mateo, CA

ROJECT BACKGROUND

Located at 1218 Monte Diablo Ave, San Mateo Monte Diablo Apartments and Townhomes collaborates with Studio T-Square (Architecture), BKF (Civil Engineering), and Sixteen 5 Hundred (Lighting Design) to blend sustainability with connectivity. Just 0.5 miles from the Bay Trail, the project features pedestrian paths, bike routes, and a pocket park for stormwater management. This transformation fosters a walkable, bike-friendly community with direct access to the Bay Trail, promoting a greener and more livable environment.

The project addresses the region’s housing needs while enhancing residents' quality of life. Walkability and green spaces promote a healthier, more connected neighborhood, creating a space where people can live, work, and play in a sustainable environment. A key feature is the integration of walkable routes and bike paths that link to the nearby Bay Trail. Just 0.5 miles away, the trail offers stunning views and recreational opportunities, encouraging outdoor activity and reducing car reliance.

VISION

The project transforms the San Mateo Monte Diablo Apartments and Townhomes into a gateway to the Bay Trail by integrating pocket parks, local murals, and iconic California trees, revitalizing the area for pedestrians and cyclists. The landscape features bike lanes, tree-lined walkways, and green spaces to encourage community interaction. A corner pocket park employs native plants and permeable surfaces for effective stormwater management, enhancing livability. Energy-efficient lighting ensures nighttime safety, harmonizing Bay Area scenery with functional infrastructure.

STRATEGY OVERVIEW

Local drought-tolerant plants enhance the landscape's character while also aiding in stormwater management. Bioswales and permeable surfaces effectively absorb and filter rainwater, reducing runoff and environmental impact. The design harmoniously integrates green spaces with essential infrastructure, providing both functionality and aesthetic appeal, thereby improving residents' quality of life. Energy-efficient lighting enhances safety while preserving the natural landscape. The continued use of pedestrian paths and bike lanes at night supports a vibrant 24-hour community.

SUMMARY

The San Mateo Monte Diablo Apartments and Townhomes illustrate how thoughtful landscape design can revitalize urban spaces. This project prioritizes connectivity, sustainability, and livability, enhancing access to the Bay Trail while improving infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a warm and welcoming environment. By integrating green spaces with stormwater management, the project not only serves as a gateway to the Bay Area but also strengthens connections among residents and fosters community interaction.
