Located on the former site of the Bilger Quarry, the new Safeway store and retail complex stitches together two disconnected shopping streets in Oakland. The landscape provides an intimate shopping street environment while offering visitors grand vistas of the old quarry pond and rugged landscape beyond. The site’s stormwater is managed seamlessly using attractive planting schemes while an informative path, annotated with historical fact sheets, leads visitors along the pond edge to an elevated viewing deck. The scheme blends together the history of the site with the current needs of the people and the environment.
