The global golf industry is becoming increasingly polarized. While some regions continue to expand and enhance golf destinations by integrating them with tourism and cultural experiences, others are witnessing the closure or repurposing of aging golf courses in response to changing environmental regulations and land-use priorities. Across all markets, however, ecological sustainability and long-term operational viability have emerged as shared challenges. In response, golf course owners and operators are increasingly adopting practical, cost-effective ecological management strategies to improve environmental performance while maintaining high-quality playing conditions.

Driven by increasingly stringent water regulations, environmental protections, and evolving land-use policies, the global golf industry is following different development paths across regions.

Steady Expansion & Continuous Upgrades

In many established golf markets, investment continues to focus on course improvements and selective new developments, with increasing emphasis on environmental performance and long-term resilience. This trend can be observed across countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, and Australia. Many projects make use of coastal landscapes, forests, and naturally varied terrain while strengthening connections with regional green infrastructure and recreation networks. Rather than simply expanding the number of courses, these markets are increasingly emphasizing environmental performance, renovation, and long-term resilience.

Across much of Asia, golf also continues to evolve, although in different ways. Japan and South Korea are incorporating native planting and ecological restoration into course upgrades, while Southeast Asia and the Middle East continue to position golf as part of integrated resort, hospitality, and cultural tourism developments. As a result, both new construction and the revitalization of existing facilities remain active in many parts of the region.

Course Closures & Adaptive Reuse


By contrast, some mature urban markets, particularly in parts of Europe and North America, are seeing older, underutilized golf courses gradually repurposed. Driven by stricter environmental regulations, water conservation requirements, and changing land-use priorities, these sites are increasingly being transformed into public parks, ecological reserves, or multifunctional open spaces that better serve contemporary community needs.

Beyond regional differences, conventional high-maintenance golf courses face two fundamental challenges shared by the global industry.

1. Ecological Performance and Biodiversity

Maintaining highly manicured fairways and greens often requires extensive turf management, irrigation, and chemical inputs. Large areas of native vegetation may be replaced with monoculture turfgrass, reducing habitat diversity and ecological resilience. In water-stressed regions, irrigation demand can exceed that of typical urban green spaces, while long-term use of herbicides and pesticides may affect soil health, water quality, and broader ecosystem functions.

2. Long-Term Operational Viability

Golf remains a relatively specialized recreational activity with seasonal fluctuations in demand. Maintaining large areas of intensively managed turf requires continuous investment in irrigation, mowing, fertilizers, pesticides, equipment, and skilled labor. At the same time, tightening environmental regulations and increasing land values have made new golf developments more difficult to approve, while upgrading older facilities often requires substantial capital investment.

III. Low-Cost Ecological Remediation: Reducing Herbicide Dependence

To address one of the industry's most visible environmental concerns—chemical use—many golf facilities around the world are implementing practical, long-term ecological management strategies that reduce maintenance inputs while improving environmental performance.

1. Transition to Native Grass Species

Replacing high-maintenance imported turfgrass with native or regionally adapted species that require less water, fertilizer, and chemical treatment while improving resilience.

2. Ecological Weed and Pest Management

Encouraging natural ecological balance through biological pest control and organic soil amendments, reducing dependence on synthetic herbicides and pesticides.

3. Improved Turf Management Practices

Optimizing drainage, adjusting mowing heights, and incorporating routine aeration to improve turf health naturally and suppress weed growth with fewer chemical inputs.

4. International Best Practices

Denmark provides a notable example, where several golf courses have successfully reduced herbicide use by approximately 95% over the past decade through integrated ecological management, demonstrating that environmental stewardship and high-quality golf conditions can successfully coexist.
